My Discovery that Chivalry has died on my way to BAMPFA

Berkeley Art Museum Pacific Film Archive
2155 Center Street,
Berkeley, Ca.
Hours
Wed-Sun, 11 AM-9 PM
Films nightly, Wed-Sun

I decided to go and see the new Berkeley Art Museum-Pacific Film Archive and experience the exhibition they have going on until May 29, 2016, called the Architecture of Life. The purpose for my choosing this museum was I wanted to go to a museum that I had never been to before. My drive down there from Winters, Ca. was interesting to say the least. Just as I got on the first bridge westbound on I-80 I heard a noise. At first I thought it was nothing but road noise from the different pavement I was driving on. As most of you that will be reading this post are aware of when driving to the Bay Area one must pay attention to all the others vehicles around you especially in heavy traffic. Also, there is no shoulder off the highway to pull on to in the event one may need to. This day the traffic was heavy and the closer I got to the Bay area the slower the vehicles were moving and impatient drivers were darting through the lanes.

Taking a Break in Napa Valley

A friend of mine named Larry stopped by my home and the two of us decided to take a drive up to Napa Valley and celebrate my decision on changing my major at Sacramento State University. Larry knew I had been struggling with trying to make the decision but with that now behind me it was time to relax. I had the luxury of being with a friend that had listened to me without voicing his opinion until I had arrived at decision on my own. Out the door we went with the sun shining gloriously as we began our adventure for the day.

To my surprise when we arrived in Napa Valley Larry headed straight for the Robert Mondavi Winery saying he had a surprise for me. This was a winery I had never been to before and was excited to see what was in store for me.

Never a Disappointment

I knew rain was not in the forecast today so I decided to go to the di Rosa. The di Rosa is a private museum located in the rolling hills of Napa on 217 acres. The di Rosa has three separate galleries, a sculpture park, a 35-acre lake, and a wildlife preserve. It had been a few years since I had been there and because they have a collection of over 2,000 artworks primarily from Northern California artists, I knew I could view some new contemporary artwork that I had never seen before. I booked a two hour tour in advance and headed out the door to begin my adventure.

This exhibition of modern art has something for everyone to enjoy. The students from Sacramento City College really gave this exhibition some thought. I say this because of the array of objects they brought together to put in one exhibition.

February 22-March 17, 2016

The reception for this exhibition was February 25, 2016 from 6-8 pm.

I went to see this exhibition yesterday and found myself going back today (March 2, 2016) because I fell in love with the artworks. Never before had I ever seen works of art created with sugar. I found the entire collection of skull works breath taking. The oil paintings were equally impressive to look at and admire.

I missed the reception for these northern Californian artists however, I was able to locate website for both of them. Here are the links to learn more about their work.

I went to the gallery on the day it opened and spoke with Trevor (a classmate of mine in Contemporary Art) about his work. While Trevor and I chatted, I told him his exhibition reminded me of how in our Contemporary Art class we had been learning about minimalism art created by other artists years ago, like Donald Judd and Trevor also brought up Richard Serra name.

Artist creates her own Kaleidoscope Images

Visiting Artist Eileen Quinlan gave a Lecture at UC Davis Art Annex on February 18, 2016, from 4:30-6:00 p.m.

Here is a little of background on Quinlan. Originally when Quinlan began her art career she enjoyed photographing landscapes with analog cameras. Then she decided to go to graduate school and while she was there obtaining her MFA decided that she only wanted to work in her art studio.
