The reception for this exhibition was February 25, 2016 from 6-8 pm.

I went to see this exhibition yesterday and found myself going back today (March 2, 2016) because I fell in love with the artworks. Never before had I ever seen works of art created with sugar. I found the entire collection of skull works breath taking. The oil paintings were equally impressive to look at and admire.

I missed the reception for these northern Californian artists however, I was able to locate website for both of them. Here are the links to learn more about their work.

This was my first time in this particular gallery. It is an L-shape design with light carpeting on the walls. Because of this the artworks in how they were displayed in their black frames and shadow boxes offered the viewer great contrast to visually be able to focus on the artworks.

Immediately upon entering the gallery the guests are greeted on the right and left side of the entrance with side sugar skull artworks.

The photo above is located on the right side of the entrance. All of the images in the exhibition had a didactic next to them.
"The Day The Music Died," Oil on wood panel by Francisco Franco

As you can see pictured below I was not the only one who was taking in these artworks.

Two guests looking at some of the artwork.

I had a difficult time deciding which piece of artwork I liked the best but, decided on the one pictured below only because to me it appeared so life like. I could hear the music playing in my mind as this couple moved across the floor.

Here is a better image of the oil painting I was looking at.

I forgot to get the title of this piece by it was painted by Francisco Franco.
Without revealing all the pieces in the exhibition here are a few pictures to demonstrate the talent of these to artists.

Examples of artwork by both artists.

I did not think the lighting in this particular gallery enhanced the artwork one bit. However, overall the exhibition was very cohesive to say the least.

I enjoyed learning about a different style of creating art and some of the history of the culture from these to artists. I feel the artists honored the individuals they represented in their art and in my opinion this is an exhibit for all to see.

  1. I saw this show today, Samantha. What struck me was the energy - so full of life, yet a show about the day of the dead.

  2. I don't know why I didn't comment on the energy you spoke of. I felt so energized when I saw this exhibition. Maybe because I was in awe of what I saw.
